Cappadocia is a region of Turkey that has many underground cities that were carved into the soft volcanic rock and used as protection from persecution and invaders for hundreds of years. The area became a monastic center in early Christian times. This photo shows what is now used as two cliff-facing underground pigeon coops with Mount Erciyes in the background. I love this photo because you can simultaneously see the bright, stark beauty of the mountain above and the dark cliff face opening to the underground world below.
