TAMPA - Hillsborough school superintendent MaryEllen Elia is getting a $37,620 bonus based on how well she met district goals last school year. Elia's performance pay, part of her contract, was about $10,000 less than the previousyear. The figure was calculated using more than a dozen indicators, most involving student performance. Elia's rating declined on several benchmarks involving minority students. She did not repeat the previous year's increases in the reading achievements of Hispanic and African-American students at key grade levels. She did better in other categories, such as raising the percentage of African-American students taking Advanced Placement exams. She also was rewarded for the increase in A schools in Hillsborough. Elia's bonus comes on top of a base salary of about $253,000.

Sure you can get someone equally competent for half huh? I guess ignorance truly is bliss for you all as she is responsible for a district of 190,000 kids, 25,000 certified staff, and balancing a $2 Billion budget! Wake up and see reality!

Ok Crystal but what if we can hire someone for half her salary? I'm sure we can get someone equally competent.
How much of this salary keeps the skeletons in the closet?

Dealing with a school district the size of Hillsborough's is a monumental undertaking and Elia continues to prove herself everyday! Her integrity and vast experience serves our teachers and our students well.

I am amazed with the level of compensation received by Hillsborough School's top administrator. I'm just grateful that Pasco Co. has an elected superintendent who is reasonably compensated. I feel awful for those HC teachers who read this article.
