Hillsborough school chief gets a bonus of $37,620

Her bonus is about $10,000 less than last year's.

TAMPA - Hillsborough school superintendent MaryEllen Elia is getting a $37,620 bonus based on how well she met district goals last school year.

Elia's performance pay, part of her contract, was about $10,000 less than the previousyear. The figure was calculated using more than a dozen indicators, most involving student performance.

Elia's rating declined on several benchmarks involving minority students. She did not repeat the previous year's increases in the reading achievements of Hispanic and African-American students at key grade levels.

She did better in other categories, such as raising the percentage of African-American students taking Advanced Placement exams. She also was rewarded for the increase in A schools in Hillsborough.

Elia's bonus comes on top of a base salary of about $253,000.
