Brenda Stima and her son, John, celebrate between miles 11 and 12 on Saturday.

Brenda Stima completed the Disney half marathon in Orlando on Saturday, with her son by her side.

Stima, 42, who is battling multiple myeloma, a blood cancer, and her son, John Stima, 15, were featured in a St. Petersburg Times article Saturday. John trained with his mother to help her reach her goal of completing the 13.1-mile race to benefit leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma research and patient services.

She raised $3,718.

Prior to the race, she had only completed an 8-mile walk but she said her son, a Clearwater High freshman, was by her side for most of the race, grabbing her hand and pulling her forward when she thought she couldn't walk any more.

"I finished," Brenda said Monday. "I would have not done it if he weren't there with me."
