ST. PETERSBURG - Celebrations for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will kick off early this year, with a series of events throughout the city this week honoring the slain civil rights leader.

On Thursday, six high school students will present their essays titled "It Started With a Dream ... Many Views, One Vision" at the Enoch Davis Center at 7 p.m.

The essay contest is free and open to the public. U.S. Savings Bonds of $400, $200 and $100 will be awarded to the first, second and third place finishers.

A banquet will be held Friday. Louisiana state Sen. Cleo Fields is the keynote speaker. Tickets cost $35. The event will be held at the Hilton St. Petersburg Bayfront.

On Sunday, the National Festival of Bands will take place at Tropicana Field from 6:15 to midnight.

High school and university marching bands from across the nation are scheduled to perform halftime drills and drumline competition in a salute and tribute to King's legacy.

Tickets cost $15 for VIP seating, $10 in advance and $12 at the gate.

The events will lead up to the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drum Major for Justice parade, which draws up to 50,000 spectators annually, on Monday.

The parade will start off at Third Avenue and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. St. S at 1:15 p.m.
