Today's Letters: Why not go a step further, ban smoking in PSTA bus shelters?
By LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Published January 16, 2008
A recent feature on improved restrictions on smoking in Pinellas County was encouraging. However, there is one huge gap in this control: PSTA bus shelters. Many bus riders are smokers, and while a minority will step outside the shelter, most do not. One side of the shelter is open, but in our frequent hot, humid weather, smoke does not leave the shelter immediately and can be inhaled by children, the aged and disabled and asthmatics while a number of buses leave only once an hour. It would cost the agency very little to post no-smoking signs. Why not ? John Royse, St. Petersburg Outlaw celebratory gunfire The beautiful city of St. Petersburg spends thousands of dollars on beautifying parks and other public areas. Are we proud of this? I am. But there are major issues that need attention by the city's leaders: The homeless issue, street gangs and gunfire before, during and after holiday celebrations. A falling bullet hit our boat about 5 feet from where my wife was standing. It made a hole in the fiberglass. We should not allow this, as the practice will spread if action is not taken to stop it. "We should not allow this" in regards to celebratory gunfire? Wow, what a concept Joe! Newsflash! It's already against the law. Now, good luck finding who did it. St Pete PD is immune to shots fired calls, it's an every day thing....

JK - Smoking is a filthy, health-damaging habit that damages the lungs of innocent bystanders who are smart enough not to smoke. I don't get drunk or high when someone drinks or does drugs at a bus stop.

John, better yet, ban the homeless from living in, doing drugs, drinking, and much more in the bus shelters. Your life is too sheltered if the only thing you have to deal with is smokers. Be sure and carry your mask, you have to breath outside air???

Mr Royse, it cost absolutely zero to the agency for you to step outside.
