CLEARWATER - A backhoe operator with Opus South struck a water main Tuesday afternoon while removing part of a sidewalk in downtown Clearwater.

The work was being done as part of a right-of-way improvement project on Osceola Avenue at the construction site of the 25-story Water's Edge condo and retail tower.

Opus South senior project manager Christine Lemons said the company had been allowed to dig 10 feet outside of the building to a 6-foot depth when workers hit the water line, which was repaired later in the day.
