Karakaris to visit Ga. Southern
Ridgewood senior John Karakaris will make an official visit to Division I-FCS powerhouse Georgia Southern on Feb. 1, Rams coach Chris Taylor said. The 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive lineman has not received an offer, but Taylor is optimistic the player will after the visit.
Two tapped for All-America tourney
Austin Adams (Zephyrhills) and Ryan Garton (Mitchell) will compete in the Under Armour preseason All-America tournament in Tucson, Ariz. They played for Team Florida, which won all three games. Adams went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. He also pitched three innings, logging six strikeouts and yielding two walks with a fastball consistently hitting 88 mph, his father, Russell Adams, said.
Wildcats' Jenkins to visit FAU
Wesley Chapel star Greg Jenkins will visit FAU on Saturday, Wildcats coach John Castelamare said. Jenkins is being recruited as an athlete, but Castelamare said the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder also is being considered as a quarterback. Jenkins threw for 927 yards, eight touchdowns and had four interceptions last season.
Castelamare said he met FAU coach Howard Schnellenberger at a recent coaches clinic and spoke briefly about Jenkins. Other schools that have expressed interest include N.C. State and Carson-Newman.
Davis will sign with Illinois
Zephyrhills shortstop Jessica Davis, left,has academically qualified and is expected to sign a letter of intent with Illinois, Bulldogs coach Craig Milburn said. Davis received a scholarship offer in June after her official visit to campus. But the early signing period came and went in November and Davis went unsigned. She earned a qualifying score last month.
Davis hit .453 and was tied for the county lead in home runs with seven last season. She also had 39 hits and 29 RBIs en route to a region quarterfinal berth.
