Today's Letters: Bikers should ride with care, not fear

Motorcycle deaths on rise story, Jan. 11

I've been reading about all the motorcycle deaths around here, much of it in recent St. Petersburg Times articles. Going out that way is not in my plans. I think of myself as a pretty safe rider/driver.

Having said that, who knows what's just ahead of you when riding? I've been around for a lot of years (68) and know one takes fate into one's own hands when one awakens each morning. Living in fear of what might happen at any given moment isn't my idea of living.

Cautious? Of course! Stupid? I hope not! I've been a pilot and can attest to riding a motorcycle as being as close as one can experience to total freedom/exhilaration, short of flying. Maybe pilots and riders are the only ones who know what I'm expressing here. For me, I'm going to ride as long as health allows.

I hope every biker (and other vehicle driver) around will read the Times story and will start paying attention a little more closely to what's going on around you. Bikers aren't always at fault in accidents. Don't live the rest of your life with the guilt of knowing your negligence killed a biker.

and the bikers who drive 100mph and cut inbetween cars and zig zag through traffic, and pop wheelies get what they deserve.

Most Bikers don't follow the road rules, so sorry if you get caught up in it. Its the Bikes that truely have a reason to watch out, because there are thousands of two tons vehicles sharing the road too!

The longer I live and more bikers see/know the more respect I seem to lose as the number of bad apples in that group seems to just keep growing. You need an large change amongst riders to get back on track. Good luck!
