Repo Man Punk Rock Show
Featuring Car Bomb Driver
FRIDAY 10 p.m. Beach Theatre, 350 Corey Ave., St. Pete Beach. $8. (727) 360-6697.
Feisty and fun punk band Car Bomb Driver pulls into a charming historical cinema to perform a preview show of Alex Cox's 1984 dystopian cult masterpiece, Repo Man. The dark comedy stars Emilio Estevez, along with Harry Dean Stanton and cameos by the Circle Jerks and the Untouchables. Estevez plays Otto, a frustrated teen, who not only contends with mediocrity, injustice and wild-eyed freaks, but has embroiled himself in a strange predicament involving a 1964 Malibu. Expect to hear the audience shouting out dialogue Rocky Horror-style - classic lines like, "Let's go get sushi and not pay!"
Mouse Fire
With Roppongi's Ace, Dynamite Walls and Malbec
FRIDAY 9 p.m. New World Brewery, 1313 E Eighth Ave., Ybor City. $6. (813) 248-4969.
One can't help but be partial to our own backyard brothers on this bill: Mouse Fire (Lakeland) and Roppongi's Ace (Tampa). The former performs shimmering pop, and the latter rough-hewn blues and country rock, and both do it well. Dynamite Walls (San Diego) is middle-of-the road indie pop, and Malbec (L.A.) adds some cool keyboard touches.
Automatic Loveletter
SATURDAY 6:30 p.m. The Orpheum, 1902 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. $9. All ages admitted. (813) 248-9500.
Automatic Loveletter singer Juliet Simms, younger sister of win win Winter's Tommy Simms, has been signed to Epic. Her band has been touring nonstop, preparing for their big-time studio session. Stunningly gorgeous, with a voice beyond her years, Simms has a rough and tender innocence about her. Her band offers a pleasantly melodic twist on the pop-punk style being played on the radio today
Skatepark of Tampa 15th Anniversary Party
Featuring the Hold Steady, above, Fake Problems and Young Live
SATURDAY 8 p.m. Czar, 1420 E Seventh Ave., Tampa. $10. (813) 247-26
The Hold Steady is in the studio again - that's big news, because 2007 was the first year since 2003 the hard-working, perennially touring band hasn't recorded anything. The guys are making special arrangements to take a break from recording to appear at this gig. The band has become legendary for its gusto-filled, beer-soaked revivals - and frontman Craig Finn's entertaining and evocative storytelling. Our own district of debauchery, Ybor City, even gets a mention in their tunes Killer Parties and Most People are DJs. The band's sound is somewhere between Bruce Springsteen and the Replacements with unique detours in between.
Hal McGee's 50th Birthday Jamboree
Featuring If, Bwana, Charles Rice Goff III, Little Fyodor & Babushka, Homogenized Terrestrials, aaronzarzutzki, Projexorcism, Pax Titania, Otolathe, Ironing, and Free Space
SATURDAY 7 p.m. Transitions Art Gallery at the Skatepark of Tampa, 4215 E Columbus Drive, Tampa. $6. (813) 342-3477.
In the mood for something completely different? Then head here for this no-frills birthday party/showcase of beeps, buzzes, abuse of random objects and multimedia. Aaronzarzutzki is a must-see, as is Otalathe.
The AKAs
SUNDAY 7 p.m. The Orpheum, 1902 Republica de Cuba Ave., Ybor City. $9. All ages admitted. $9 advance, $10 day of show. (813) 248-9500.
These Philly garage rockers on the rise recall the New York Dolls and other classic no-nonsense bands.
Juvenile
SUNDAY NIGHT 1 a.m. Club Underground, 802 E Whiting St., Tampa. Ladies free before 11 p.m. Guys $10. VIP $25. (813) 221-4582.
For a rapper with an album chock-full of party tunes, including Back That Azz Up, Juve can be surprisingly serious. After Hurricane Katrina, the N'awlins son returned to his ravaged hometown to shoot a video for Get Ya Hustle On, a song that badmouths the government, including Mayor Ray Nagin, while encouraging people to get what they need to survive, even if it means dealing drugs. Get there early - everyone drinks free before 11 p.m. Rumor had it Young Jeezy was also supposed to show up. We're told that's not happening, but at least it'll be a good icebreaker at the show.- Dalia Wheatt
Oteil and the Peacemakers
With Cope
SATURDAY 8 p.m. Skipper's Smokehouse, 910 Skipper Road, Tampa. $12, $15. (813) 971-0666.
Blues rocker Derek Trucks calls Oteil Burbridge the Michael Jordan of bass guitar. He's performed with the Allman Brothers and Aquarium Rescue Unit. His band's deft mix of blues, jazz, gospel and funk gets spun through stunning improvisational tapestries. Tampa's Cope has that reggae-funk-rockin' charm of Sublime, prettified by piano interludes.
