Tributes to King are spread around county

COUNTYWIDE

Localities around Pinellas County are honoring the memory and legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

-Safety Harbor's tribute begins at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Safety Harbor Community Center, 650 Ninth Ave. S. The event will kick off with a pancake breakfast followed by a march down Main Street at 10 a.m. The march will start at the Community Center and end at Daisy Douglas Park. Call (727) 724-1572.

-The city of Largo is also hosting a celebration Saturday from 2 to 5 p.m. at Ulmer Park, 301 West Bay Drive. The event features crafts and inflatables for children and refreshments for purchase. Donations will be collected to go toward the city's MLK Scholarship Fund. A community photo will be taken.

-Clearwater's tribute is Monday and includes a breakfast, march and rally. The 7:30 a.m. breakfast will be at North Greenwood Aquatic Center at 900 N Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. Participants will then march from the center to Coachman Park for a rally. Lineup for the march begins at 9:45 a.m. The rally will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Minister Ayakao Watkins of St. Petersburg will be the keynote speaker. Tickets to the breakfast are $4 for adults and $2 for children under 10. Tickets can be purchased at the door. OZONA

Ozona Nature park offering free hike

Explore the Ozona Nature Preserve at 5 p.m. today . Meet at the North Street entrance to the park. The free hike is recommended for adults and children 10 and older, accompanied by a parent. Birders should bring binoculars and cameras. Wear long sleeves, long pants and closed-toe shoes. The preserve also needs volunteers. Call Reggie Hall at (727) 784-2131.

Just wondering...Why isn't there a national holiday on Nov. 22 for slain President John F. Kennedy, like the one for slain activist Martin L. King????
