Passenger killed when truck hits stopped van

TAMPA - An early morning crash Thursday left a Dover man dead and two others in serious condition.

Bertoldo Gonzalez, 53, was killed when the van in which he was riding was rear-ended by a Ford F-350 truck at S Forbes Road and Downing Street in Plant City, said the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Northbound on Forbes Road, the van driven by Artisteo R. Vamaca, 35, came to a stop at Downing Street, about a mile east of his home at 6218 Downing St. Deputies said the driver of the approaching Ford F-350, 23-year-old Patrick Gene Bailey, failed to see the stopped van in time to fully stop and ran into the rear of the van about 7:47 a.m.

Vamaca was uninjured. He was arrested at the scene and charged with having no valid driver's license.

Of his four passengers, all of Dover; Gonzalez died; Martin Gonzalez, 24, was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital in serious condition; Adel Alfredo, 24, was transported to South Florida Baptist Hospital in serious condition; and Armando Gomez, 32, was not injured.

Bailey and his passenger Rickey Nelson Terrell, 23, both of Plant City, were not injured.

The accident is under investigation.
