  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Where do you want to shop?

Talks of a Tropicana Field remake and ongoing downtown development spark visions of upscale boutiques and shops in St. Petersburg. Maybe they'll come and maybe they won't, but Neighborhood Times figured it would be good to find out what residents would want in the South Core garage or a new mall that could replace the ballpark.

Simply put, what types of stores would you most want to be downtown, somewhere between the interstate and the waterfront? Dream big. The retail outlets that win the most favor from you, the consumer, will get a call from the Times asking if they'd like to come to town. Trader Joe's? Ikea? Wegmans? Macy's? Share your ideas at It's Your Times or send this form to Sandra Gadsden, the St. Petersburg Times, 490 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg, FL 33701

Why not keep the building and use it for cat shows? I lived in St. Pete when they built it and it cost us a fortune. Now they want to tear it down? Has anyone been to Italy? They keep buildings for thousands of years. Dog shows would be good.

I want to shop at a completed Grand Central district on Central Avenue. Its coming along nicely, revived and owned by people who live in the surrounding neighborhood. I do not want a mall or fancy stores. This is St Pete and the people have spoken.

I would totally go for Whole Foods, IKEA, American Outfitters, Barnes and Noble, a coffee shop that's not Starbucks, Urban Outfitters, great deli--as long as it's lots of good stuff all tgther in open air envir. with trees and benches!
