Mayor Frank Hibbard and former mayor Rita Garvey will face off at a candidates forum 7 p.m. Tuesdayat the Morningside Recreation Center at Harn Boulevard and Flushing Avenue. Clearwater residents will vote Jan. 29 for the city's next mayor. The forum is sponsored by the Morningside Meadows Homeowners Association and is open to the public.

School Board meeting on live TV

The Pinellas County School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesdayin the conference hall of the administration building, 301 Fourth St. SW. Get your pit bull's manners tested

The SPCA Tampa Bay will test pit bullterriers and pit bull mixes for good manners at 5 p.m. Thursday and 11 a.m. Jan. 27 at the shelter, 9099 130th Ave. N, off Starkey Road just south of Ulmerton Road. Dogs that pass the 10-step test will receive a certificate from the American Kennel Club. For every dog that passes the test, the Animal Farm Foundation will give a $150 donation to the SPCA's homeless pets. The foundation is a New York-based organization that is trying to change the perception that all pit bulls are dangerous. Interested pet owners can schedule appointments for the test by calling (727) 586-3591, ext. 167, or by visiting spcatampabay.org. There is a $10 testing fee.

Antarctica and global warming

Learn what research in Antarctica on volcanoes, earthquakes and dinosaurs can tell us about climate change. Meet a volcanologist specializing in science on the cold continent from 1 to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Brooker Creek Preserve Environmental Education Center, 3940 Keystone Road. Thomas Wagner, program director for the Antarctic Earth Sciences program at the National Science Foundation, has visited Antarctica and the South Pole five times. Free. Call (727) 453-6800.

Tag along for tour of birding sites

Join the Clearwater Audubon Society for a tour of Clearwater's best birding sites. Meet at 9 a.m. Saturdayin the north parking lot of Bright House Networks Field, 601 N Old Coachman Road. The group will look for songbirds, raptors and water birds, then have lunch in Largo and visit an exhibit of miniature art. Bring cameras and binoculars if you have them. All are welcome. OLDSMAR

Library's grand opening Saturday

Come celebrate a big addition to Oldsmar. The new Oldsmar Public Library, 400 St. Petersburg Drive E, will have free grand opening festivities from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday featuring music, events and food. The ribbon-cutting is at noon, then a street team from Radio Disney AM 1380 will play music and lead games until 2 p.m. There will be face-painting and vintage Oldsmobiles, and the library will be open for tours.
