  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Share with us your tales of Largo yore

Some of the most memorable stories to appear in the Largo Times weren't written by members of our staff.

Remember former Circuit Judge Joe Donahey's memories about the Largo Packers football team? Or George Feaster regaling us with tales about Largo's first bank, which was started in 1905?

We learned about the Paradise Island Rockettes, a group of 18 women who joined together to perform line dancing and sing for different groups of senior citizens. We also enjoyed hearing from the Soroptimist International of Largo Mid-Pinellas, which held a fundraiser to help people in impoverished areas of the Philippines, and Karl Lehmann, 16, who refurbished the garden at Sun Coast Hospital as part of his quest to achieve his Eagle Scout rank.

All of those stories have one thing in common: They came directly from members of the community.

The Largo Times has created two features to showcase members of the public. The first is called Share Your Story, where we record people discussing Largo's history and their connections to the community. The second is Neighbor to Neighbor, stories written by our neighbors, about our neighbors.

These stories have been fascinating. I loved Jim Janowski's story about his wife, Penny McArthur Janowski, who was added to the Florida State University's Alumni Band Wall of Fame. She started twirling a baton in high school and devoted her life to teaching others to do the same, he told us.

But to continue publishing these stories, we need your help. We need your submissions to make these features successful.

If you have information about Largo's history that you want to share, contact me. If you know someone who deserves some recognition, contact me. I can answer any questions you might have and help you get your story into the pages of the Largo Times.

We already know you have wonderful stories to tell. Don't keep them to yourself. Share them with us and your community. I can be reached at 727 445-4151 or cweimar@sptimes.com I'm looking forward to hearing from you.
