Prayers go out to Darfur victims at Sunday service

People in the Tampa Bay area will gather at 3 p.m. Sunday at Espiritu Santo Catholic Church, 3405 Philippe Parkway, for "Standing in Solidarity: An Interfaith Prayer Service for Victims of Violence in Darfur."

The service coincides with Holocaust Remembrance Day. Its goal is to raise awareness about the atrocities in the Darfur region of Sudan and prevent future acts of genocide.

The guest speaker will be from Catholic Relief Services, which provides food, shelter, clean water, sanitation, education and agricultural support to more than 150,000 refugees.

ST. PETERSBURG

Jewish leader to discuss future

Arnold M. Eisen, chancellor of the Jewish Theological Seminary, will discuss "Commandment, Community and the Future of American Judaism" in his first public address in the Tampa Bay area. The town hall-style meeting will take place at 8 p.m. Jan. 31 at Congregation B'nai Israel, 300 58th St. N.

Eisen has worked for the past 20 years with synagogue and federation leaders to address the issues of Jewish identity, revitalization of Jewish tradition, and redefinition of the American Jewish community.
