PINELLAS READY TO OPEN ANNEX FOR PACKED JAIL
The Pinellas County Sheriff's Office on Wednesday showed off its new 256-bed annex just north of the existing jail on 49th Street. A vacant county bus garage was renovated for $3-million to create the annex. The first 240 inmates will move in Sunday. The extra space helps alleviate overcrowding at the jail's main facility. Cpl. Kathleen Peyinghaus, who will work in the facility, praised it for its smaller, community-type feeling.
Sister accused of attack with sword
A samurai sword-wielding woman was arrested early this morning in Brandon after attacking her sister, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. Deputies arrested Annette Clarissa Smith, 42, at 12:42 a.m. at 601 Brentwood Place in Brandon. According to the arrest affidavit, the incident arose from an argument. The sister suffered serious cuts on her left hand, including a severed tendon on her middle finger, when she tried to wrest the sword away from Smith. Deputies charged Smith with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and took her to the Orient Road Jail.
Candidate's wife arrested at clinic
The wife of a candidate for the Hillsborough County Commission was arrested Tuesday at her laser hair-removal clinic and charged with medical fraud and practicing medicine illegally, the state Department of Health said. Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies arrested Rita Moroz Kruse, 45, at her business, Tampa Laser Touch, located in the same Countryway Boulevard complex in Westchase as her husband Don Kruse's campaign headquarters. Kruse, a Republican, is running for County Commission in District 6. He is challenging incumbent Commissioner Brian Blair for the party nomination.
Driver accused of lobbing an orange
His hurled orange hit its mark perfectly, but Jeremy Velez was much less successful, authorities say, when he tried to strike David Ross with his car. Velez, 20, of Brooksville faces a felony charge of aggravated assault for allegedly trying to hit Ross with his car in a fit of road rage Tuesday morning. Velez remained in custody Wednesday at the Hernando County Jail in lieu of $1,500 in bail.
