Internet safety seminar offers help to parents

TARPON SPRINGS Tarpon Springs police school resource officers and Tarpon Springs High School PTA will present an Internet safety seminar at 6:30 tonightat the high school, 1411 Gulf Road. The program will include information about Web sites used by children and teens, how sexual predators target and maintain relationships with children online and safety tips to prevent children from becoming victims. The panel will include an Internet crimes investigator and will take questions from parents. Refreshments and snacks will be available. PALM HARBOR State high court suspends lawyer The Florida Supreme Court has suspended Palm Harbor attorney Vincent James Krocka from the practice of law because he committed two felonies, reports the Florida Bar. Krocka, whose practice was in the 2100 block of Tamarron Terrace, lived in Tampa. According to the Bar, in April 2006 Krocka was found guilty of child neglect and criminal mischief in Hillsborough County and was sentenced to 5 years in state prison. COUNTYWIDE Pit bulls will be tested for manners The SPCA Tampa Bay will test pit bulls and pit bull mixes for good manners at 5 p.m. today and 11 a.m. Sunday at the shelter, 9099 130th Ave. N, off Starkey Road just south of Ulmerton Road, Largo. For every pit bull or pit bull mix that passes the Canine Good Citizen Test, the Animal Farm Foundation will give a $150 donation to the SPCA's programs for homeless pets. Interested pet owners can schedule appointments for the test by calling (727) 586-3591, ext. 167 or visiting www.spcatampabay.org. There is a $10 testing fee. Guardian ad Litem volunteers needed Pinellas County's Guardian Ad Litem program will soon begin training volunteers to act as the courtroom voice for children who have been removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect. Guardian ad Litem volunteers visit the child once a month, become familiar with his or her case and make recommendations to help ensure the child has a safe, caring and stable environment. The average time needed is four to six hours a month. Thirty hours of training are required, and guardians receive ongoing assistance. The next class starts Feb. 16 at Stetson University College of Law in St. Petersburg. To volunteer and arrange to attend a one hour orientation, call (727) 464-6528.
