Waddy returns to practice

Nature Coast star Cherikhan Waddy, above, practiced Tuesday for the first time since injuring her right leg in a 50-15 win against Springstead on Jan. 11. Sharks coach Travis Lamle said he expects Waddy to be ready for next week's district tournament. Though Lamle never gave a specific diagnosis, Waddy used crutches last week and did not play. She is Nature Coast's leading scorer, averaging 12.3 points.

"We'll she how she does the rest of the week," Lamle said. "She did fine, but it was a little sore at the end of practice."

Pasco's Larry headed to Cali

Pasco receiver Demetrious Larry said Tuesday he plans to attend West Hills Calif. Community College to play football. He also said he hopes to walk on to the basketball and track teams. The school is southwest of Fresno.

"I didn't even know about it until my coach (Tom McHugh) called me into his office and asked if I was interested in going to California," Larry said. "I was like, 'Yeah.' "

McHugh said he got a call from one of the West Hills coaches expressing interest in the 6-foot-2, 165-pounder after seeing highlight video on a recruiting Web site.

"It's an opportunity a lot of kids don't get," McHugh said. "When it kisses you right in the mouth it's hard to say no."

Financial terms are still being hammered out, but McHugh said "everything looks good." Larry expects to play receiver at the school. He led the Pirates with 498 yards receiving and six touchdowns.

FHSAA finals stay in Lakeland

The Florida High School Athletic Association announced that it has extended for two years its agreements with the Lakeland Center to host the state championships in girls and boys basketball, girls volleyball and wrestling.

"The city of Lakeland, Polk County Schools and the Lakeland Center have been outstanding hosts for the FHSAA finals in basketball, girls volleyball and wrestling for many years," FHSAA executive director John A. Stewart said in a release.

"We are pleased to be able to extend our working relationships with them in these state championship events for an additional two years."

The two-year extensions mean that all four events will continue to be played at The Lakeland Center through the 2010-11 school year.
