Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Congratulations to the Hillsborough County-level winners of the annual Parent Teacher Student Association's Reflections arts contest. This year's theme was "I can make a difference by ..." The winners, chosen from among 1,100 entries and announced Sunday at Gaither High School, will go on to judging at the state level.

Students from Newsome High School in Lithia dominated the high school level, winning seven of the nine awards. One of the winners is senior Yasmin Serajfar of Valrico.

Serajfar, 17, created a clock out of a round piece of wood. She burned an image of the world into the wood and painted it.

She usually spends her spare time making jewelry, which she sells to raise money for animal-focused charities. But when she heard about the contest, she decided to create the clock, which she titled "Time is Running Out."

She said the piece represents her view that problems such as global warming need to be addressed before it's too late.
