CLEARWATER - On Kelly Cornell's first day on the job as Clearwater Central Catholic's corner kicker, her first boot missed her teammates and the field of play and barely nudged the back of the net. Not to worry. Cornell overcame some early jitters to assist on two cornerkick goals in the second half and the Marauders picked up a 2-0 victory over Cardinal Mooney. "I haven't taken a corner kick this whole season and then yesterday in practice they decided to try me out," said Cornell, a senior. "I was a little nervous. I haven't taken one in quite a while." Eighteen minutes into the second half, Cornell looped one in front of the net and junior Summer Ewing knocked it in for the lead. Two minutes later, Cornell looped another corner kick in play and freshman Torey Camporini headed it into the net. CCC entered 17-5-3, but Cardinal Mooney (10-8-1) opted to keep nine players back on defense most of the game and provided the Marauders' with an offensive challenge. CCC out-shot the Cougars 26-8, but 14 attempts in the first half failed to score a point. CCC goalkeeper Mackenzie Kehner had seven saves; Cardinal Mooney keeper Emily Teffenhart had 13.
