CLEVELAND Long-shot kucinich bows out of race Democrat Dennis Kucinich is abandoning his long-shot bid for the White House - his second - as he faces a tough fight to hold on to his other job - U.S. congressman. In an interview with Cleveland's Plain Dealer, the six-term House member said he was quitting the race and would make a formal announcement today. "I will be announcing that I'm transitioning out of the presidential campaign," he said. He has received little support in his presidential bid; he got 1 percent of the vote in the New Hampshire primary and was shut out in the Iowa caucuses despite a devoted following. Kucinich, 61, is facing four challengers in the Democratic congressional primary March 4. WASHINGTON McCain victories perk up war chest John McCain, riding high after victories in New Hampshire and South Carolina, has raised more than $7-million this month, collecting in three weeks more than he took in during a three-month period last year. Spokeswoman Jill Hazelbaker said he expanded his total base of contributors to more than 110,000 donors and raised $3-million online. WASHINGTON FEC sits idly byamid hot campaign The Federal Election Commission, which is supposed to enforce campaign laws, met Thursday but could take no action because four of its six member seats were empty. A long-simmering dispute over the appointment of Georgia Republican Hans von Spakovsky to the commission has halted Senate confirmation of all three proposed replacements and left the FEC without the required four members at the start of a major election year. Chairman David Mason, one of the two remaining commissioners, opened the largely symbolic meeting by lamenting the "unfortunate situation in which we find ourselves." The lack of a working quorum puts the commission into a holding pattern, especially when it comes to enforcing new disclosure requirements that were co-written by candidate Barack Obama. Times wires
