ST. PETERSBURG - After 65 minutes of applying pressure, Seminole finally cashed in - but it needed help.
The Warhawks (14-8-2) were the beneficiaries of an own goal and Mitchell Dawson added an insurance goal to help Seminole win the 5A-11 district title with a 2-0 victory over Northeast at Lakewood High.
Seminole dominated possession much of the game but Northeast turned away several scoring opportunities by staying in position and keeping the Warhawk forwards away from rebounds inside the box.
Northeast goalkeeper Ian Ronshausen turned away point-blank opportunities from Seminole forwards Josh Howard and Sebastian Thuriere in the second half but was victimized by a loose ball that he and a Viking defender tried to go after and clear. The defender mistimed his slide and the ball deflected off Ronshausen and trickled into the Vikings' net.
Ten minutes later Seminole struck again as Northeast (14-3-1) began to commit more players to the attack. Dawson found himself with a one-on-one opportunity around the right side and scored easily from inside 10 yards.
The Vikings' best opportunities came in the first half, and forward Jasmin Mecanovic had a strong blast end up just wide of the net. In the second half Northeast had a couple of corner kicks with time running out but failed to get the bounces needed to put a shot on goal.
