LARGO - In a one-sided contest, Tampa Prep defeated Calvary Christian 7-2 to become the district champion.
The Warriors struck first when a Greg McClimans shot rebounded off the Terrapins keeper to the foot of Benton Jones, who capitalized on the opportunity. The remainder of the first half belonged to Tampa Prep.
Though hampered by offside calls, which demonstrated the quickness of their forwards, the Terrapins scored twice and received an offensive boost when their third goal of the half went off a Calvary defender.
"At halftime we made some adjustments with the forwards and I think they responded to that pretty well," Terrapins coach Jose DaCosta said.
The changes showed, as a relatively penalty-free second half got under way. Tampa Prep made runs at Calvary keeper Andrew Szarejko, who was hammered with 20 shots during the game. In the eighth minute of the second half, Szarejko ripped the ball from the foot of a Terrapins forward to save what appeared to be a sure goal.
Standout sophomore forward Wes Sever led the Terrapins' offensive charge in the second half. Sever had three goals and one assist.
