WESLEY CHAPEL - The absence of Pasco's biggest star was the buzz of pregame warmups.

"They started looking for him and they said he's not here," Hudson coach Paul Vescio said. "I said, 'Relax, he's not going to miss this game.' "

Sure enough, Pirates star Jose Montelongo was an excused late arrival. But "not that late" as Pasco coach Barry Grayling put it.

Pasco never found the passion that vaulted it into the Class 4A, District 8 title game and Hudson seized Friday's opportunity with a 5-2 upset, snapping back-to-back district titles for the Pirates.

"They put a whooping on us," Grayling said. "We didn't come to play."

Hudson (16-5-2) again found its spark in Scotty Combs, who scored three of the Cobras' first four goals. He gave them a 1-0 lead 11 minutes in thanks to some nifty footwork. Then he made it 3-1 on a spin-and-shoot move in the final two minutes before halftime.

Pasco (20-5-2) found some offense early in the second half and began to generate opportunities. Montelongo's best chance came off a rebound in the 49th minute. He tried firing a rebound into the net, but Cobras defender Josh Fox deflected the shot to end the threat.

Both teams hoped to win for the chance to win a home game and avoid the possibility of traveling to Orlando Bishop Moore.

"Who wants to play those guys?" Vescio said. "On the road? They have a little bit more of everything. Now we've got a home game and a trip to Olive Garden on Coach (Linda) McQuade. That's the best part."
