Miss Michigan crowned as Miss America

Miss Michigan Kirsten Haglund, a 19-year-old aspiring Broadway star, was crowned Miss America 2008 on Saturday. Haglund, of Farmington Hills, Mich., sang Over the Rainbowto clinch the title. Miss Indiana Nicole Elizabeth Rash was the first runnerup, and Miss Washington Elyse Umemoto was the second runnerup. A $50,000 scholarship and a year of travel come with the crown. Haglund studies music at the University of Cincinnati. The crowning at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip was aired on TLC. Christian Brando dies of pneumonia Christian Brando, the troubled eldest son of the late actor Marlon Brando, has died of pneumonia, an attorney said Saturday. He was 49. Mr. Brando died Saturday morning (Jan. 26, 2008) at Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center, said David Seeley, who represents Marlon Brando's estate. Seeley said Mr. Brando was taken to the hospital on Jan. 11. Hespent five years in prison after pleading guilty to manslaughter in 1990 for killing his sister's boyfriend at the Brando family's hilltop estate.
