Whale carcass taken for study
State wildlife officials recovered on Saturday the carcass of a North Atlantic right whale calf that washed ashore Friday night on the northern coast of Volusia County. The carcass was taken to Gainesville, to the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine, for a necropsy, said Tom Pitchford, a research biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Right whales, the most endangered large whales in the world, number about 300. The whales migrate to the coast of southern Georgia and northern Florida each winter for calving and nursing their young. The calf that washed ashore in Volusia was a male, about 16 feet long and more than 1,500 pounds. He was a newborn and still had the umbilical cord attached, officials said.

Retiring rep's daughter arrested
The daughter of Rep. Dave Weldon was arrested Friday after hitting a bar bouncer with a high-heel shoe, authorities said. Kathryn Marie Weldon, 21, of Melbourne was arrested at the County Line Saloon in Brevard County, authorities said. She whacked the bouncer, who had to get stitches, during a fight among patrons, said Lt. Andrew Walters, a spokesman for the Brevard County sheriff. Kathryn Weldon was released Friday on $500 bail from Brevard County Jail. She was charged with simple battery. Rep. Weldon announced Friday that he would not seek an eighth term in Congress. The Republican doctor from Palm Bay said he wants to return to his medical practice full time. Spokesman Jeremy Steffens said the announcement has nothing to do with Kathryn Weldon's arrest. Steffens added Weldon and his wife are "going to stand behind their daughter" but would wait to find out all the facts.
