St. Peter's dean will retire on Jan. 1, 2009

The Very Rev. Dr. Russell Johnson, dean of St. Peter's Episcopal Cathedral since 2004, will retire Jan. 1, 2009. Johnson, who originally planned to serve until May 2009, is leaving early for health reasons. The former Marine officer joined St. Peter's, at 140 Fourth St. N, St. Petersburg, after serving as canon for pastoral care at Christ Church Cathedral in Lexington, Ky. He will begin a preretirement sabbatical leave in early July.
Pre-Lenten program starts Thursday
"Walking in the Spirit of Christ" is the theme of this year's mission at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 2101 22nd Ave. S, St. Petersburg. The church holds the pre-Lenten mission annually. Fathers Charles and Chester Smith, Chicago natives and the first African-American twins to be ordained in the Roman Catholic Church, will lead the program, which runs Thursday through Feb. 3. The priests will lead the 7 p.m. services on Thursday and Friday. A youth gathering will be held 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the church and parish hall on Saturday. On Feb. 3, the 10 a.m. "St. Joseph: Liturgy of the Mass" will be followed by lunch at Immaculate Conception, 2100 26th Ave. S. Call (727) 822-2153.
Church will display quilt items Feb. 16
More than 200 quilts and other quilted items will be displayed 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 16 in the sanctuary and narthex of Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, 6315 Central Ave., St. Petersburg. The day also will include vendors selling goods and demonstrating services. The Sunset Quilters and the church's Pilgrim Quilters will have items for sale. The donation is $5 to view the quilts.
