  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Today's Letters: Recycling requires little money, effort

Surplus should not go into recycling Jan. 27, letter

Contrary to what the letter writer states, curbside recycling is a common sense plan for everyone. There are many benefits of recycling. These are well known and do not need reiterating.

I would estimate that at the very least, 50 percent of what we dispose of each day is recyclable, and that doesn't include yard waste. If this is the case, then the city wouldn't need another fleet of trucks for curbside recycling, because they could have regular trash pickup one day per week and curbside recycling the other regular pickup day since it amounts to the same quantity of waste each week.

I don't even think they would need to use much of the waste management budget's surplus, if any, because the resources already exist for pickup two days per week. This is not a "sop to the environmentalists," but a practical and responsible venture for the city and its residents. It is long overdue.

Tea dances

Charge for dances

Here's a novel idea to keep the tea dances: Have the attendees pay an admission fee that will the support the event. Where do these people get the sense of entitlement that the city of St. Petersburg should be responsible for funding their entertainment?

Additionally, how many residents of Largo, Seminole, St. Pete Beach, et al., attend these events with the expectation that St. Petersburg should subsidize their entertainment?

Staff garage properly

On Sunday, we spent 25 minutes trying to exit the BayWalk parking garage. There was only one attendant on duty, and cars were backed up to the third level of parking. The line was increasing behind us as movies let out.

This is a major aggravation and a life safety issue. With cars backed up that far, all traffic is blocked and people cannot get into or out of their vehicles.

This is about the sixth time this has happened. It's usually on Sunday evenings. We will not be returning to BayWalk until the garage can properly staff the gates.
