Writers workshop open to budding journalists

The 2008 Writers Workshop, a journalism program for Florida high school students and teachers, will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Poynter Institute, 801 Third St. S.

Tuition is $30. Space is limited. Scholarships are available for low-income and minority students. The deadline to apply for a scholarship is Feb. 8. To get more information or register, go to www.poynter.org/highschoolwriters or call 456-2332.

Vendor signup for arts,crafts show extended

Vendor registration for the Sunsational Arts & Crafts Show at the Sunshine Center has been extended to Feb. 8.

The show is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 15 and 16 in the Sunshine Center Shuffleboard Ballroom, 330 Fifth St. N.

A 10- by 10-foot area is $25 with a 6-foot table, or $20 if the vendor provides the table. Extra card tables can be rented for $5 each. Items for sale must be new and handcrafted. For information or to register, call 893-7622.

Goodwill apartments available at 4 locations

Did you know Goodwill offers affordable living options for people with low incomes, including seniors and people with disabilities?

Goodwill's Freedom Villages, in Tampa, Pinellas Park and Clearwater, offer one- and two-bedroom apartments.

Heritage Oaks in Palm Harbor offers one-bedroom apartments for people 62 and older with low incomes.

Prospective residents should call the property in which they are interested to check availability or to be put on a waiting list.

The four Goodwill apartment communities are:

Shop amid sea breezes at the Open Air Market

Take in the sea breeze and enjoy the Treasure Island Open Air Market each Friday in February and March from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Treasure Island Community Center, 1 Park Place, off 106th Avenue.

Fresh produce, arts and crafts, antiques, collectibles, food and beverages will be available.

Volunteer ombudsmen for seniors are needed

The Long-Term-Care Ombudsman Program administered by the Florida Department of Elder Affairs is seeking men and women of all backgrounds who have concerns about residents' rights, funds, food, drug regimens, abuse and neglect and are good at negotiating and advocating.
