Florida Orchestra features Gershwin program
By John Fleming, Times Performing Arts Critic
Published January 31, 2008
I like a Gershwin tune, how about you? That's the musical question this weekend as the Florida Orchestra plays a Gershwin program, with Richard Kaufman on the podium. There will be the overtures to shows such as Strike Up the Band, Oh, Kay! and Girl Crazy. Michael Kim will be the piano soloist in Rhapsody in Blue. Singer Lisa Vroman will make a return appearance with the orchestra (she performed Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins and Rodgers and Hammerstein songs in previous seasons) to offer her stylings of Someone to Watch Over Me, Summertime, Embraceable You and other Gershwin favorites. Concerts are at 8 p.m. Friday at Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, 1010 N MacInnes Place, Tampa; 8 p.m. Saturday at Mahaffey Theater, 400 First St. S, St. Petersburg; and 2 p.m. Sunday at Ruth Eckerd Hall, 1111 N McMullen-Booth Road, Clearwater. $19-$54.
