School coach in sex case resigns
By Times Staff Writer

TAMPA The Newsome High soccer coach arrested Thursday night on seven courts of unlawful sex with a 17-year-old girl has resigned from the Hillsborough school district. Ronald Lewis, 37, resigned before his arrest, said school spokesman Stephen Hegarty. Lewis had worked as an aide at Newsome since August, where he was a computer lab manager. He coached the boys soccer team. School officials removed him from the classroom Wednesday after a parent reported allegations that he was involved in an inappropriate relationship with a student. According to the Hillsborough sheriff's office, Lewis in January admitted the affair to a juvenile witness, saying that he and the 17-year-old had been having a sexual relationship since February 2007. She is now 18. Lewis was released from jail after posting $52,500 bond.
