TAMPA - Freedom coach Jason Herring has always given senior Hannah Camp a simple message:
"You catch it, you shoot it."
Camp heeded Herring's advice Friday night, coming through clutch with a tie-breaking 3-pointer with over a minute to go that lifted the Patriots to a 42-39 win over host Bloomingdale in a 5A-8 district semifinal.
The Patriots had built a 10-point second-quarter lead before Bloomingdale battled back to tie it late in the fourth. The Bulls hung tough until a potential tying 3-pointer by senior Paris Moore 11 points with two seconds left rattled off the rim, ending her stellar career.
Freedom (19-7) moves on to tonight's championship against top-seed Tampa Bay Tech (25-1), which has beaten the Patriots twice by an average of 14 points.
"We wanted it more," Herring said. "It was an entire team effort."
There was junior Abby Alger, who had just four points but tallied four blocks, including a key one late in the fourth. There was senior leader Charlet Davis, shrugging off a shin contusion to score a game-high 13. And there was forward Barbara Battle grabbing key rebounds.
Together, they'll take on a TBT team that is on pace for one of the best seasons in program history. The Titans cruised past King, 64-44 in the other semifinal, largely thanks to sophomore guard ReRe Jenrette, who tallied a triple double (12 points, 14 rebounds, 10 assists) as well as four steals in TBT's swarming press.
