Girls basketball: 'Canes can't quite catch up to Golden Eagles

LARGO - In the first semifinal of the Class 2A, District 9 tournament at Indian Rocks Christian, the Golden Eagles took an early 37-19 halftime lead, then had to withstand an 18-14 second-half run by Bishop McLaughlin, including a 9-4 run in the third quarter, before pulling away for a 51-37 victory Friday.
The Golden Eagles (13-12) will meet Tampa Prep tonight at 7 in the championship.
The Golden Eagles were led by junior Courtney St. Louis' 30 points. She was helped by seven other Golden Eagles, led by two back-to-back 3-pointers from sophomore Ryan Ashburn.
The Hurricanes (5-15) put up quite a fight, especially in the second half. They were led by junior Kristen Pawlowski's 24 points.
In the second semifinal, Tampa Prep took an early 15-6 lead and didn't look back, en route to a 60-23 win over Calvary Christian.
The Terrapins were led by junior Ayala Wasser's 41 points. Junior Becca Gwyn also scored in double digits, with 10 points.
The Warriors were led by freshman Sami Mauder's 11 points. She was helped out by fellow freshman Sarah Trill (seven points).
