- For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Why Obama will get my vote
By TONI MORRISON
Published February 3, 2008
Toni Morrison, Nobel laureate in literature, once famously described Bill Clinton as America's first black president (in a 1998 column in the New Yorker). Last week, she wrote a letter to Barack Obama, an actual black man, to endorse him. Here is her letter. Dear Senator Obama: This letter represents a first for me - a public endorsement of a presidential candidate. I feel driven to let you know why I am writing it. One reason is it may help gather other supporters; another is that this is one of those singular moments that nations ignore at their peril. I will not rehearse the multiple crises facing us, but of one thing I am certain: This opportunity for a national evolution (even revolution) will not come again soon, and I am convinced you are the person to capture it. May I describe to you my thoughts? I have admired Senator Clinton for years. Her knowledge always seemed to me exhaustive; her negotiation of politics expert. However I am more compelled by the quality of mind (as far as I can measure it) of a candidate. I cared little for her gender as a source of my admiration, and the little I did care was based on the fact that no liberal woman has ever ruled in America. Only conservative or "new-centrist" ones are allowed into that realm. Nor do I care very much for your race. I would not support you if that was all you had to offer or because it might make me "proud." In thinking carefully about the strengths of the candidates, I stunned myself when I came to the following conclusion: That in addition to keen intelligence, integrity and a rare authenticity, you exhibit something that has nothing to do with age, experience, race or gender and something I don't see in other candidates. That something is a creative imagination, which coupled with brilliance equals wisdom. It is too bad if we associate it only with gray hair and old age. Or if we call searing vision naivete. Or if we believe cunning is insight. Or if we settle for finessing cures tailored for each ravaged tree in the forest while ignoring the poisonous landscape that feeds and surrounds it. Wisdom is a gift; you can't train for it, inherit it, learn it in a class or earn it in the workplace - that access can foster the acquisition of knowledge, but not wisdom. When, I wondered, was the last time this country was guided by such a leader? Someone whose moral center was un-embargoed? Someone with courage instead of mere ambition? Someone who truly thinks of his country's citizens as "we," not "they"? Someone who understands what it will take to help America realize the virtues it fancies about itself, what it desperately needs to become in the world? Our future is ripe, outrageously rich in its possibilities. Yet unleashing the glory of that future will require a difficult labor, and some may be so frightened of its birth they will refuse to abandon their nostalgia for the womb. There have been a few prescient leaders in our past, but you are the man for this time. Good luck to you and to us. - Toni Morrison

Pretentious letter. Obama, like Jesse and Al use words such as hope and bright future and one nation without separation, but it ends there. Great ideas, but no actual plan to get there. No substance. Voting Clinton or Republican, NOT OBAMA MUSLIM

Is there any other parties represented at this paper other than Dem (wits). Clearly this woman has an infatuation. Obama has no track record what so-ever but she makes him seem like the next coming of Jesus Christ.

If Osama Bin Obama is your vote, then you must be a blind sighted White Boy who is dreaming about the word "Change." Even if the country falls apart elects Obama, things will only change for the worse. I can see the US turning into another Kenya.

Boy, Obama and Clinton sure know how to play the flute for the masses. Free health care for everyone, $5,000 for every child and world peace. Heck why don't they just make it $100,000 per child and a free car for everyone. How will we pay for it??

Neither Hillary nor Obama have any relevant experience dealing with international situations - well, Hil MAY have directed table settings in the White House - 8 years of "experience"

I'm 2nd generation American & like Obama, I consider myself American. But I recognize that being raised by Latino parents inluenced my values, ethics & thinking just as being raised by Middle-Eastern Muslims shaped his. His denial of this worries me!

Obama has vision and speaks through all the political BS to people's better instincts. He makes people believe we can be better. It's very rare that someone has arrived at the national stage without having to sell their soul to special interests.

What it boils down to is if you are for open borders, free trade and conmprehensive immigration, he is your man. Hillary or Obama you have very few if any differences. More China, India and illegal workers. Fact by deed regardless of what you buy.

The Muslims will destroy us from the inside out. What a great place to start but from the President of The United States. For those that say he is not Muslim. Is he going to come out and admit it? Please. Look at his father and step father. Radicals!

Hillary is old politics. Obama "is" change from this, not to mention Hillary has been taking money from special interests.... why should I believe she will be doing the people's business ??? Enough of the Clinton / Bush dynasty already. Enough.

Now that it appears Ron Paul is out of the running, whether it is McCain/Romney or Obama/Clinton, it will again be the lesser of 2 evils. Pick your poison.

I support Hilary. If Obama wins, I will vote for McCain for President. I don't believe Obama is ready, and am scared that other nations will also come to that conclusion (terrorists as well.)

Hillary can't even run her own marriage. Wake up people. She says she brings change yet takes more $ than anyone from special interests... THIS IS FACT. She would release her records if she really wanted you to know about her "first lady" experience.

I have no idea what this author is saying. I see a letter full of platitudes and no substance....just like Obama. He has yet to offer actual solutions to our issues....just feel good "change" speeches.

What Obama stands for is a change from vitriolic partisanship to bi-partisanship. McCain has some of the same qualities. Do you really think Hillary or any of the other canidates could break the girdlock on Captial Hill?

Poor Obama will get thrown into the government "machine," spun around, chewed up, and then spit out. Go Team Go! And poor Toni is horribly naive to think anything else!

If you dont know what he stands for, do some research, its not that hard. I am leaning towards Obama myself even though I dont agree with all of his views. Fresh blood is what is needed to bring this economy back to life. No more republican free fall

Platitudes! Hope and Change. Change to what? The reason she is voting for him is based upon the commonality of race. Obama has yet to outline clear policies - excpet to raise taxes. So he articulates well and makes us feel good. Give me a break!

The only reason (I hear people say) to support Obama is that he looks Black, and we don't want to be accused of being 'racist', do we? So what is he supposed to do once elected? 'Look Black'?

Really, What are any of his promises? I truly am in the dark about what he would do when pressed on any issues. Integrity not to lie during the campaign is one thing-not taking even a light stand on important issues may even be more worrisome.

It really amazes me that, again, liberals only care about feelings. I saw no information whatsoever on anything concrete; foreign policy, domestic policy, immigration. No,it was all about ephemeral, vague wonderful feelings. Need I say more.

Obama's idealism is too good to be true; and in my experience that type of candidate will disappoint you in the end. I will vote for Hillary, because we know what we're getting with her, and we won't be let down.
