Girls basketball: IRC dictates pace, picks up the championship

LARGO - As the clock struck zero Saturday, Indian Rocks Christian players celebrated their Class 2A, District 9 championship.
Last year the Golden Eagles were the district runnerup. After the Golden Eagles defeated Tampa Prep 41-34, coach Phil Farver said, "We have peaked at the right time; we are definitely happy."
Once the initial celebration ended the girls went over to their fallen teammate, Ryan Ashburn, who hurt her knee in the final quarter, so she could join in the championship celebration.
Meredith Monti scored a game-high 15 points for IRC. Kindal Farver, Courtney St. Louis, and Tori Trador each made crucial free throws down the stretch to hold the lead.
Phil Farver was not happy with the zone defense the Terrapins were playing in the second quarter so he had his team slow the game pretty much to a crawl.
Kindal Farver held the ball near midcourt as all the players on both teams stood still. She held onto the ball for the final five minutes of the quarter as they did not run a play or attempt a shot until there was less then 20 seconds left.
"To me it's good coaching; you do what you got to do," Phil Farver said.
