Starkey Environmental Education Center, 10500 Wilderness Park Blvd., New Port Richey, will host a program from 7 to 8 p.m. Wednesday focusing on the Florida black bear, the state's largest native land mammal. Learn about the biggest threat facing the black bear - habitat loss due to development. Presented by Mary Barnwell of Southwest Florida Water Management District. Shelter welcomes youths in need

If you know a teen who is struggling and at risk for turning to the streets, Youth and Family Alternatives Inc. may be able to help. YFA has counseling services and resources available at its RAP House Shelter, which has beds for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 17, especially those who may be homeless. RAP House is the only shelter for children in Pasco County and offers a safe, clean environment with 24-hour supervision and professional counseling services. Youth residing at the shelter attend local schools and are provided with meals, snacks and personal hygiene items. The shelter, which is supported in part by United Way of Pasco and Publix Super Markets Charities, can make a real difference in the lives of youth who turn to it for a safe place.
