HOLIDAY - Ali Alzarkani and his friend were talking and catching up Sunday night, with the TV on low and the front door open. Ali Jr., Alzarkani's 6-year-old son, was playing in the doorway.
The boy had an empty water bottle, according to sheriff's reports, which he was tossing around on the concrete entryway of the Ardsley Road apartment.
The quiet evening was suddenly broken up with screaming.
"Pick it up! Pick it up!" Alzarkani said he heard a man shouting.
His friend, Abdulmohsin Alsultani, jumped up to see what the commotion was. The child stood frozen in the doorway.
Outside Alsultani met a neighbor on a rant.
"Alsultani told him, 'Why are you cursing that child?'" Alzarkani said.
Then Alzarkani, a kitchen manager from Iraq, stepped in to defend his son.
"Are you crazy? What's wrong with you?" Alzarkani told him.
That's when the man, identified in sheriff's reports as 53-year-old Pablo Velez, pulled a gun from his waistband.
He already had threatened the boy with it, the report says, telling him to stop throwing the bottle or else he'd shoot.
No one was hurt. Velez stashed the gun, which turned out to be an airgun, in the office of an adjacent hotel, where he works, deputies said.
That's where deputies found it, before they arrested Velez on two charges of aggravated assault.
He remained in the county jail Monday evening, in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Alzarkani said his son, a kindergartener, is doing okay, though he was shaken.
"It's the first time he's seen a gun ... in his face," the father said.

*Pete-a neighbor steps onto someone elses property to threaten about noise? I'm sure the noise of the child&bottle were below legal limits set. In our country we ask to speak to a parent before attacking their child. Wise up, laws are for a reason!

Agree with Steve, if Molly had added those two extra letters "BB" in the title Times wouldn't even have a story. Left wing Times at it again!

What about the morality of pointing a gun at a 6 year old? Who cares if the bottle was annoying? Why argue over permits? This Butthead is wrong. Ethnicity is not important in this case.He took security from a child, you can't get that back.I say jail

JAE, what's hair got to do with anything? Steve, you think a 6 yo knows the difference between a BB gun & a 357 Magnum. Mike, you're SUPPOSED to have a permit. Wonder how many really do.

A better and more accurate title for this story would have been; "Man pulls BB gun on boy, 6". But then that wouldn't get the anti gun reaction the Times is looking for. Lock this criminal up.

More charges sgould be added. How about endangering the welfare of a child, and how about checking this nut out, like baker acting his butt. Or how about disorderly conduct, I would have hit him with every charge imaginable, what an idiot!

Cia-Get your facts straight. You need a permit to carry a firearm on your person.

But did the kid learn that it can be aggravating to your neighbors to continuously knock an empty container against concrete? Not likely. Respect your neighbors, kids, and you won't drive ordinary people to rage, especially those with guns.

Oh that's right, you don't need a pistol permit in Florida, no one everyone has one. Off to Iraq for this man also.
