What is the weight of weapons, ammunition and equipment that an infantry soldier must carry in a typical patrol operation? H.F. Russell Jr. According to a variety of sources, the weight of the load depends largely on the mission. But generally, the weight a soldier carries should be no more than about 50 pounds in a combat mission, and about 70 pounds for marching. Some reports have soldiers carrying as much as 70 pounds for combat and 100 pounds for marching. The Army's goal is no more than 50 pounds for marching by 2010. Compiled from Times and wire reports.
