Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Today's Letters to the Editor: Don't let sports shove aside the arts

The people of St. Petersburg have an important choice: to remain an arts city or become a baseball city.

I attended the Jan. 26 Tchaikovsky concert at the Mahaffey Theater and parked in the garage. I came to the realization that should the new stadium be built, I would not attend a concert at the Mahaffey the night of a baseball game.

What I have always considered a pleasant evening would become a nightmare in competing for a parking space and exiting at 10 p.m. when night games conclude.

Baseball schedules are set by the league and as such are inflexible. The Mahaffey would be forced to schedule events on nights the Rays are not in town.

It would also have to schedule around other events that may take place at the new stadium.

The future of the Mahaffey and the Florida Orchestra in St. Petersburg would be in jeopardy if the new stadium takes over the city.

I find it hard to beleive that we're really taking the "build them a new stadium" deal seriously. Just say no. N-O-E!

Future of Mahaffey is more secure than it's ever been & the Florida Orchestra in St. Pete is NOT IN jeopardy solely b/c of a new proposed bayfront stadium, which would embellish the city's quality of life & national stature for many years to come.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAA! Sorry, but Mayor Baker has worked tirelessly to dismantle the arts in this city. He thought it a GOOD IDEA to move the orchestra to the Palladium! Did you vote for him? Twice?

LOL Let me see what's better for the city, thousands going to watch baseball and spending money or 120 people going to watch the Florida Orchestra?

Charles you are creating a problem will not exist. Our city is diverse enough to support both, so please stop with the either or. The Mahaffey will survive and youll be able to go to see the Orchestra as always, just please stop being so negative.
