Human society's pet expo coming in march

COUNTYWIDE
The Humane Society of the Nature Coast will host the 2008 Pet Expo from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. March 15-16 at Tom Varn Park, 301 Darby Lane, Brooksville.
Vendor spaces are now available for both pet-related and non-pet-related businesses. Rental rates vary based upon vendor requirements. Overnight security is provided at the event.

Also, photo entries are now being accepted for the Open Hearts Pet Calendar for 2009. Winners will be chosen in two categories, judges choice and popular vote. The winners will be featured as a Pet of the Month for each month in the calendar.
The entry fee is $10 per photo. Photos must be of pets only no humans allowed in the photo. There is no limit to the number of photos entered or how many pets are featured in a photo.
All voting for photos will be conducted during the Pet Expo, where visitors can pay $1 per vote. Voting will end at 2 p.m. March 16. There will be a total of 25 winners chosen from the entries, which will be announced at at 5 p.m. March 16.
The Humane Society also has 2008 Open Heart Calendars available for $7 each. Orders can be done online at www.hsofnc.com, or can be purchased at the Humane Society shelter, Paper Playhouse, Curtis Chiropractic Clinic and AAA Auto Club.

Operation PRIDE set for Saturday cleanup
Operation PRIDE will be Saturday throughout Hernando County.
This is an organized countywide neighborhood cleanup outreach program. Bags and gloves will be supplied to all those who help out.

British humor with dinner at Elks lodge
A dinner show featuring the "Brit Wit" Jimmy Keys will be Saturday at Aripeka Elks Lodge 2520, 9135 Denton Ave. Dinner will be at 6 p.m., and showtime is at 7:30.
The British comedian has a style described as a cross between Robin Williams and Elton John.

Fine Arts Council applications available
The Hernando County Commission is accepting applications from individuals interested in volunteering on the Hernando County Fine Arts Council.
The purpose of the Fine Arts Council is to promote the arts and to support groups associated with the arts in Hernando County.
There are four unexpired terms on the council, one effective until Dec. 31, 2010, and three effective until Dec. 31, 2011.
Applications are available in the County Administrator's office, Room 461, Hernando County Government Center, 20 N Main St. Completed applications must be returned to the office no later than 5 p.m. Feb. 19.

Gymnastics, karate, line dancing offered
The City of Brooksville Recreation Department is taking registration for these programs at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, off Darby Lane:
- Gymnastics for children ages 4-13. Classes are at 5, 5:45 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays. Classes are provided by East Pasco Gymnastics and Cheerleading. The cost is $32 per month. Registration is limited to eight children per instructor. Call Lisa Pitts at (813) 494-3066 or JBCC at 544-5498.
- Karate for adults and for children 4 and older. The Mang Ho Jujitsu Karate style is taught. Classes are from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Mondays for ages 4-16 and from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays for ages 17 and older. Fire hydrants to be flushed, flow tested
Spring Hill Fire Rescue will be flushing, flow testing and conducting periodic maintenance of its fire hydrants Thursday through Feb. 22 in the area bordered by Commercial Way on the west, Kass Circle on the east, County Line Road on the south and Timber Pines on the north.
This testing may cause a clouding of the water, which will make the water appear dirty. Those who gets this clouding in their water should allow the water to run until it is clear.

Money mangement course offered couples
Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service will offer a two-evening series on Money Management for Couples from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday and Feb. 13 at the Extension Office, 19490 Oliver St.
This is a free program that will help couples understand each other's set of values and personal attitudes about money and provide insight on how couples can improve their financial health.

American Legion Hall to host flea market
Love Your Neighbor and American Legion Post 99 have partnered to host monthly outdoor flea markets on the third Saturday of each month at the American Legion Hall, 208 E Fort Dade Ave. The next flea market will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 16.
Vendor spaces are available for $10 (bring your own tables). The American Legion will be selling hot dogs.
Proceeds benefit American Legion service projects and Love Your Neighbor's outreach to the homeless and hungry.
Love Your Neighbor hosts free dinners from 4 to 6 p.m. every Sunday at the American Legion. Clothing, toiletries and bread are also available at no cost.

John Davidson in concert Saturday
Legendary entertainer John Davidson will perform at 2 p.m. Saturday in the Performing Arts Center at Pasco-Hernando Community College's West Campus, 10230 Ridge Road.
Davidson will perform country and pop songs, as well as original compositions. His show includes comedy while he sings in English, Spanish and French, and plays the guitar and banjo.
