Spartans hold on, snap Seminoles' win streak: Girls 5A basketball

BRADENTON - In the past few games, Southeast relied on its tenacious attitude and solid defense to make up for struggling to hit free throws. But the Seminoles couldn't recover from that problem Thursday, losing 37-35 to Lakewood in the region quarterfinals. The loss snapped the Seminoles' 24-game win streak. With 30 seconds left in the game and the score tied at 35, Southeast's Bianca Hanna was fouled on a layup. But she missed both free-throw attempts. Then the Spartans (20-6) got a putback from Kerah Nelson with 8.5 seconds left to take the lead. Carolyn Taite, who scored eight, missed a jumper as time expired for Southeast, which went 11-of-19 from the line. Nelson finished with 21 points and nine rebounds to lead the Spartans. The Herald
