GAINESVILLE - At his national signing day news conference, Florida coach Urban Meyer promised to quickly turn his attention to filling the vacant coaching positions on his staff.
He started Friday with USF defensive line coach Dan McCarney, formerly head coach at Iowa State.
"Dan is a great addition to our coaching staff," Meyer said. "His experience as a head coach will be invaluable. He has a proven record as a recruiter ... and I have a tremendous amount of respect for him as a coach and a person."
McCarney, 54, has 30 years of collegiate coaching experience, half spent instructing defensive lines, which he will do with the Gators. He spent last season with the Bulls after 12 seasons leading the Cyclones.
"I'm thrilled about joining the Gator Nation," McCarney said. "I have the utmost respect for Coach Meyer and the Florida football program. It is a dream come true for me and my wife and we are looking forward to the opportunity."
McCarney called the decision to leave USF difficult.
"Dan did an outstanding job for us this season," Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said. "I have known him since 1989. He's an excellent coach and will always be a good friend. I couldn't be more impressed with the results he produced on the defensive line for us this season."
