Bring your kids to help design new playground

CLEARWATER Bring your kids to the Ross Norton Recreation & Aquatic Complex, 1426 S Martin Luther King Jr. Ave., between 4 and 6 p.m. Wednesdayand help design a new playground. Children will vote for the equipment they want to see included when the recreational area is built in front of the complex in June. At 6 p.m., participants can view playground presentations, hear comments from Mayor Frank Hibbard and enjoy free hamburgers and hot dogs. Clearwater has formed a partnership with the state of Florida and the Let Them Be Kids initiative of the Changing Point to build the new playground. Changing Point is an international effort that brings play to children around the world. Call (727) 562-4803. Planning meeting on beach hotels The Clearwater Planning Department will hold a public meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday on a proposed increase in the maximum allowable density for beach hotels. The meeting will take place at the Clearwater Beach Recreation Complex, 69 Bay Esplanade. The proposal will be presented to and discussed by the City Council in March. Call (727) 562-4567. COUNTYWIDE Classes to teach boating safety Two local flotillas of the Coast Guard Auxiliary have safe boating classes coming up. In Tarpon Springs, two classes will be offered in the auxiliary room at the Landings Marina, 21 Oscar Hill Road: - A one-day course from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 23. Cost is $35. - A program from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays Feb. 19 to March 11. Cost is $50. Call (727) 938-8568. In Clearwater, the auxiliary will offer a two-day program on how to use a GPS and read nautical charts 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at the Clearwater Sailing Center, 1001 Gulf Blvd., Sand Key. EAST LAKE Hear what's new in local tourism Learn what's happening in local tourism when D.T. Minich, executive director of the St. Petersburg/Clearwater Visitors & Convention Bureau, speaks at the Upper Tampa Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce lunch on Wednesday.
