Guild says it's okay to buy tickets for friday's 'Forbidden' show

The Hernando Performing Arts Guild will present "Forbidden Broadway" on Friday at the Hernando Performing Arts Center at Hernando High School, 700 Bell Ave.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and showtime is at 7:30.

Step up to the mike in fair's karaoke contest
Those who love to sing are encouraged to enter the karaoke contest at the Hernando County Fair April 7-9.
More than $3,5000 will be awarded in four categories: Male, female, child for ages 13 and younger and duo (any age).
There is no entry fee, but contestants must pay for admission to the fair.
Registration is open to the first 100 contestants. The deadline is 4 p.m. March 31.

There's room in adult education classes
Hernando County Schools' Adult Education Department has openings in the following exercise and fitness classes: dance exercise, tai chi, prenatal yoga and kundalini yoga.
There are also openings in the following computer and technology classes: Graphic Design Using Corel Draw, Web Design using Front Page, Basics of eBay - Buying and Selling, Digital Photography using Photoshop Elements and Beginning Computers.

March 1 is deadlinefor grant applications
The Community Foundation of Hernando County is accepting applications for its next cycle of grants.
Nonprofit organizations wishing to receive a grant must submit an application by March 1. Selections will be made by mid-April. Preference will be given to organizations that demonstrate the most cost-efficient activity in an effort to maximize the funds available.
Grant application guidelines are available online at www.cftampabay.org. Click on "Our Divisions" and select the local foundation. Select "Nonprofit Resources" and read the grant application guidelines before filling out the application form. Completed forms are to be e-mailed to aberg@cftampabay.org
There are two grant cycles a year. The next grant application deadline will be Sept. 1.
The Community Foundation of Hernando County, established in 2006 as a division of the Community Foundation of Tampa Bay, was spearheaded by a group of residents of Hernando County with the mission to build a better community through creative philanthropy, vision and leadership.

Learn gun safetyat sportsman's club
The Hernando Sportsman's Club will offer a home firearms safety course at 9 a.m. Saturday in the clubhouse at the club's range in the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area off Commercial Way, north of Weeki Wachee.
All equipment and materials will be provided. The course is approximately five hours, including range time.

Exercise, workshops, singing at Chinsegut
Chinsegut Nature Center will host the following:
- Chinsegut Run and Fun Walk, 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Packet pickup and late registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. The 5K run will start at 8:30 and the 1-mile fun walk will start at 8:35. For the 5K, handcrafted awards will be given to the overall male and female winners, top masters male and female and the top three finishers in each age division, male and female. For the fun walk, awards will be given to the top three people identifying the most flagged natural plants on the walk. The entry fee is $15 for the 5K and $12 for the walk. - Fire Management, 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 20, presented by the Division of Forestry and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Participants will learn how fire helps maintain the ecosystems and wildlife, as well as watch a demonstration burn. Preregistration is required.
- Junior Birding Workshop, 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 23. This free program is for children 16 and younger. There will be a bird walk, puppet show, bird games and a bird slide show. Children younger than 7 must be accompanied by an adult. Call for reservations.
- Central Florida's Upland Communities, 9 a.m. to noon Feb. 27, presented by Colleen Werner. Those attending will learn about the plants in the sandhill and xeric plant communities. The program will include an indoor presentation and outdoor walk. Preregistration is required.
- Nature and Folk Song Night, 7 to 9 p.m. Feb. 29. Bring your instrument, voice and a camp chair as the group sings around the campfire. If there is rain, the event will be taken indoors.

All car show proceeds to benefit veterans
A Veterans Car Show will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 29 at Baldomero Lopez State Veterans Nursing Home, 6919 Parkway Blvd.
Registration is free and will be from 9 to 11 a.m. Trophy presentation will be at 2 p.m. Refreshments will be available.
The event is sponsored by the Nature Coast Volunteers for Veterans and all proceeds and donations will benefit the veterans at the nursing home.

Dine and dance at 'Spring Spectacular'
The Korean War Veterans Association Post 174 and Ladies Auxiliary will host a "Spring Spectacular" dinner, dance and show on April 12 at VFW Post 10209, 14736 Edward R. Noll Drive.
The event will include a buffet dinner and feature the Strings N' Strutters, who perform mummers-style-style music and entertainment, with music from the 1920s to '40s. Following the show, there will be music for dancing, provided by the Strings N' Strutters' 10-piece band.

Ridge Manor Kiwanis has golf tournamentThe Ridge Manor Kiwanis will host a golf tournament March 15 at Sherman Hills Golf Club, 31200 Eagle Falls Drive, east of Brooksville. A shotgun start will be at 8 a.m.
The cost to enter is $50 per golfer if registered before March 1, or $55 if registered after. The cost includes lunch.
Hole sponsorships are also available: A Silver Sponsor is $75, which includes only the hole sponsorship; a Gold Sponsor is $150, which includes the hole sponsorship and two players in the tournament; a Platinum Sponsor is $250, which includes the hole sponsorship and four players in the tournament.

Explorer Post 409 plans golf tournament
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office Youth Education Services and Explorer Post 409 will host the 22nd annual Scramblers Golf Tournament March 15 at Brooksville Golf and Country Club at Majestic Oaks, 23446 Links Drive (off Croom Road).
Sponsorships and registration for golfers are now available. Hole sponsorships are $50 and the cost to enter the tourney is $75 per golfer, which includes a hot buffet lunch. Donations of prizes are also needed. All donors and sponsors will be recognized at the event.
Part of the proceeds will benefit the sheriff's Youth Education Services, which offers programs that teach youth the importance of being a good citizen and to make the right choices throughout their lives. The programs are taught in both private and public schools.
Proceeds will also benefit the sheriff's Explorer Post 409, which educates youth about law enforcement procedures through training and service. Explorers receive training from certified law enforcement instructors in all areas of police work and assist the sheriff's office by providing volunteer assistance such as traffic control and parking at community events.

Senior FFA presents hypnotist Brian Imbus
The Brooksville Senior Future Farmers of America will present a show with hypnotist Brian Imbus. The show will be at 7 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Hernando Performing Arts Center on the school campus, 700 Bell Ave.
Imbus has performed throughout the world for the past 15 years. During his show, volunteers will be selected from the audience to come on stage to be hypnotized.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the front desk at the administration building at Hernando High School. Tickets can also be purchased by calling Rick Ahrens, chapter advisor for the Brooksville Senior FFA, at 585-6154. Information on Brian Imbus is available at www.brianimbus.com.
