  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Fundraiser kicks off YMCA promise fund

The YMCA of North Pinellas, 4550 Village Center Drive, needs to raise $77,000 this year to keep its promise: Turn no one away just because they can't pay. The YMCA's annual fundraising campaign starts at 6:30 p.m. today with a short program of speakers, including Major League Baseball veteran catcher Mike Difelice. Activities for the family include pitching to Difelice, trying on his equipment, self-defense demonstrations, an obstacle course, fitness assessments, free chair massages and more. Try to win a weekend rental of a Porsche Boxster or bid for silent auction items, such as NFL gear autographed by Mike Alstott. The free event is open to all, but if you plan to attend, call (727) 772-9622.

Owners are required to fill out an application, sign a consent form, provide a valid ID and pay for services. Feline neuters will be $15 and canine neuters $30. Participants must have proof of a current rabies vaccine and a county license. Call (727) 797-7722 for details.

BeachWalk project ahead of schedule

The BeachWalk promenade, a $30-million Clearwater Beach revitalization initiative, is ahead of schedule. City officials say work on S Gulfview Boulevard should be wrapped up by May and - along with the two promenades - opened to the public. The only part of the eastside walkway that will stay closed is in front of the Hyatt Aqualea construction site. Construction crews will move to Coronado Drive, where on-street parking, final asphalt and more lighting will be added. This is expected to take two or three months. Most of the BeachWalk project should be wrapped up by July. Since work on the project started in summer 2006, officials have said it would be finished by early 2009. Favorable weather has helped.
