Dog jumps into water after gator
The owner thinks he was trying to protect her.

Sarah Frey holds a photo of Freddy, pictured here, who was killed by an alligator at Al Lopez Park on Monday. The 5-year-old cairn terrier had tangled with a possum and anything that would harass Frey's two cats whenever they all went for a walk.

Sarah is convinced that Freddy lived to keep her safe. "I think I was probably crying for eight hours straight" after his death, she said.

TAMPA - Gator devours small dog. That is the story. Four words and a dot.
Nothing stunning, at first glance. Alligators exist around these parts. They live on animal protein. Small dogs make convenient targets.
You could take the basic details - a dog unleashed, a gator lurking in Al Lopez Park, and a state-licensed trapper who will kill the gator and have it turned into edible nuggets - and mold them into some combination of fear, blame, and righteous indignation.
Or you could wave all that aside and choose to see it another way: as a tale of remarkable bravery.
This is what Sarah Frey would prefer. The dog was hers. His name was Freddy.
Frey is 37. She is a manager for a company that leases space to beauty salons. She works from home in a carriage house in Hyde Park. Freddy used to sleep in her bedroom. After he died, she went home and hugged his bed, his awful-smelling bed, because she missed him so much.
"I think I was probably crying for eight hours straight," she said, surrounded by flowers her friends had sent.
Freddy was a cairn terrier, 5 years old, 19 ferocious pounds. His favorite toy was a rubber goldfish that squeaked when he chomped on it. She called him Hyde Park's head of security. Neighbors told her he barked only when she was home. She is convinced that he lived to keep her safe.
Once he chased a possum and made it play dead. Once he chased a UPS truck and nearly got run over. Every day, when Frey took him for a walk and her two cats tagged along, Freddy chased away anything that got near the cats.
On Monday morning, Frey took Freddy for a walk in Al Lopez Park. They went south toward a small pond. Freddy was not on a leash.
Suddenly he took off. Only he knows why. Near the path, a sign in red capital letters said, Warning: Alligators.
Frey did not see what happened next. She is grateful for this. She was running behind him but she was not fast enough.
Other people saw it, and they told her what they had seen.
Their accounts included this notable detail: The gator never left the water.
They said Freddy saw the 7-foot gator and he ran to the shoreline. He stared down this armor-plated carnivore and he began to bark.
Frey would like to think that Freddy believed he was protecting her.
He did not stop with barking.
Freddy jumped into the black water.
When she reached the shoreline he was gone.

This sob-story article doesn't do justice to Frey. So,the dog almost got hit by a ups truck. Park &Recs Chief said she was warned abt letting her dog off lead before. It wasn't mistake or accident, it was a preventable occurrance. She should be fined.

I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved Freddy. To me it seems he was trying to protect you from any harm. I think that the gator should be left alone. It is his home that we as humans are building in. LEAVE THE GATORS ALONE!

If someone is stupid enough to bring a story like this to the paper, they should expect some backlash. If she wanted to morn the dog in peace, maybe she didn't need to share her sob story with thousands of readers. There are more newsworthy things.

I think you people who have no ounce of empathy are ignorant. Let the lady mourn her dog. Would you just stop blaming. You need to be reminded of the perfection you expect of others but choose not to be judged in the same manner.

Sarah, I am sorry but you really should have learned your lesson after Freddy almost got hit by the UPS truck. You might have thought it was cute that your dog was "protecting you" but the dog should of had a leash and the gator should not be killed

Why do people continue to blame their lack of responsibilities on others? This dog should have been on a leash, PERIOD. Gators were here before we were, respect them and there will be no problems. Quit complaining and get another dog and a leash.

Perhaps if this lady kept her dog on a leash or tied up he'd still be alive. She herself said the dog chase a ups truck and almost was run over. What should that tell her? I love animals and feel bad for dog, but it's the owners own d**mn fault.

A well-trained dog doesn't go after everything it sees, and it should have been on a leash. His constant barking and "protective" streak probably meant he considered his owner and the cats his property, which is not healthy.

The Dogs usually win in Jacksonville? Is that why they've lost 14 of the last 17 games?

I wish I could give the little dog a medal for his bravery. There's a lot of heartless people who read this. They should just move the gator to some desolate place, not kill it.

I hope her boss is not harsh on her for skipping work to spend time with her animals. Maybe if she was a little more concerned with her work this would have never have happened.

Sorry the lady lost her dog, but ever hear of a LEASH?!?! There is a leash law in this state for crying out loud and I'm tired of selfish dolts refusing to follow it. I've been harrassed many times while walking my dogs by dogs like this.

I feel bad for the dog but that gator has been there for quite some time. It's a shame he is going to relocated. There are signs all around the water warning people about the gators. The dog could have been managed better.

There are three signs greeting everyone entering Al Lopez Park. These signs list the parks rules. Each sign says dogs must be on leashes and poop scooped or cleaned up after. Had the owner followed the posted rules she would still have her pet.

She should be paying the trapper fee. It shouldn't be on the taxpayer's dime since she was breaking the law by not having her dog on a leash. Sadly, this poor dog, with a history of running off, paid for its owner's reckless and repeated decision.

Although I feel sad for Ms. Frey, all dog owners really, really need to leash their pups. And, there should be a limit to the protective behavior; after a certain point, this type of fixated behavior should not be condoned and encouraged.

Sarah I fel bad you lose your puppy, but remember you let your dog run free. I have small dogs and would NEVER take them to a park that has gators. I love my little companions too much to place them in danger. A leash might have saved your dog.
