Rezoning effort starts for hotel at John's Pass

A year and a half after buying a bar and restaurant and dreaming of a hotel at John's Pass, Joe and Anthony Dagostino are now moving forward with plans for a 40-room hotel in the entertainment district. Although it's still in the early stages, the brothers are working on having 1.4 acres rezoned for a planned development, which would make a hotel simpler to permit on the mostly vacant land just south of 129th Avenue, across from Sculley's and the Hut. The rezoning will require public meetings before plans are finalized.

Sushi restaurant opens new location

Popular sushi restaurant Hook's has opened a new location at 1120 Pinellas Bayway. After opening six years ago at 1210 Dr. Martin Luther King St. N in St. Petersburg, owner Hook Atsavinh started two other outlets, one in St. Pete Beach and another at Park and Seminole boulevards. The beach store closed after the property sold, and the other store is operating as T'Asia. Hook said he is shopping for enough property to build a hibachi-style restaurant.

ST. PETERSBURG

Diversity Day event is set for Saturday

BayWalk will host the fourth annual Diversity Day Celebration on Saturday, along with the St. Petersburg NAACP chapter, the Sembler Co. and the city. The event showcases minority- and women-owned businesses and celebrates diverse cultures. They want 'diversity day' on Saturday? How about holding it at 9 pm instead of 9 am, and they'll get some 'diversity' for sure. What a way to keep a diversity event from being diverse. 9 am on a Saturday?
