Is the forthcoming tax rebate from Uncle Sam taxable income?

- Hardy Bryan, St. Petersburg

No, the rebate checks are not taxable income, so nothing will be withheld and you won't have to declare it and pay taxes on it later. Most taxpayers are eligible for $600 and most married couples $1,200, amounts that would start to phase out at adjusted gross incomes of $75,000 for individuals and $150,000 for couples. Another $300 will be issued for each child under 17. Checks are expected to start arriving by early summer.
