Police: woman in bay likely killed herself

CLEARWATER

Police say a body found floating in Tampa Bay on Tuesday appears to be the result of a suicide. Rhonda M. Serafini, 54, who lived in the Imperial Cove condominiums at 19029 U.S. 19 in Clearwater was found dead in the water near her complex. The cause of death was ruled to be drowning. According to Clearwater police, Serafini left a suicide note for her family. Detectives said there was no obvious sign of criminal activity. Serafini's family contacted police after hearing about a woman's death on the news.

Students needed for youth summit

The city of Clearwater is seeking high school students to help to organize a city-hosted youth summit at the Sheraton Sand Key Hotel. The April 19 summit will help teens develop leadership skills as they discuss the concept of human capital and offer their input on how to improve Clearwater as a youth-friendly and young professional-friendly city. An organizational meeting will be at 4 p.m. Monday in room 130, Clearwater Municipal Services Building, 100 S. Myrtle Ave. Interested teens should be either residents of Clearwater or attend a Clearwater school if they reside outside the city limits. Search under way for utilities chief

Pinellas County utilities director Pick Talley is retiring March 31 and the county is searching for a replacement. Officials estimate it will take until June or July to fill the position permanently. Tom Crandall, director of utilities general maintenance department, will fill the position in the interim. Crandall, 61, currently handles field operations, managing the county's vast network of underground pipes. He has worked for the department since 1992 and has been in the utility business for 40 years. He was utilities director for Collier and Bay counties and the cities of Tarpon Springs, Safety Harbor and Pinellas Park.

School districtto host auction

Pinellas County Schools' annual public auction of surplus/obsolete equipment will take place at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at the Walter Pownall Service Center, 11111 S Belcher Road in Largo. Motor vehicles, buses, industrial machinery, cafeteria equipment, office machines, pianos, commercial mowers, musical instruments, televisions and more will be available for preview between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Friday.
