State baseball heading east
Tradition Field in Port St. Lucie will be the site of the 2009 and 2010 Florida High School Athletic Association baseball finals.
The Treasure Coast Sports Commission, the New York Mets, St. Lucie County and the St. Lucie County School District jointly submitted the winning proposal. Centennial High in Port St. Lucie will serve as the host school.
Proposals also were received from Bradenton, Kissimmee, Port Charlotte and Sarasota, the baseball finals' current home. The 2008 finals will be the last played in Sarasota under the current agreement.
"We are excited to bring the FHSAA baseball finals to Port St. Lucie," FHSAA executive director John A. Stewart said in a statement.
Three teams in state poll
The county's big three in Class 5A boys basketball - Pinellas Park, Lakewood and Clearwater - were ranked in the state poll.
The Patriots, thanks to their victory over the Tornadoes in the 5A-9 district final, jumped from No. 5 to No. 3, the highest ranking in the program's history.
Lakewood moved up from fifth to sixth. Clearwater dropped from seventh to ninth.

Russell signs with St. John's
St. Petersburg Catholic senior goalkeeper Kristin Russell signed a letter of intent Wednesday to attend St. John's University in the fall.
Russell compiled a 0.56 goals allowed average five goals, nine games in her senior season with the Barons. Battling injuries much of the year, Russell had 67 saves and five shutouts.
Russell also was a standout for Carlisle High in Carlisle, Pa., where she spent two seasons before transferring to SPC. In her sophomore year, she was named the Carlisle Sentinel player of the year and athlete of the year at Carlisle High after leading the school to its first national top 10 ranking.
